Walnut Bread
Makes 1 round loaf
Ingredients
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup warm water
- 1/4 cup light brown sugar
- 1 envelope dry yeast (2 1/4 tsp)
- 3 cups bread flour
- 1/2 cup whole-wheat flour
- 3 tablespoons walnut oil
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 1/2 cups walnut halves
Directions
- Combine water, brown sugar and yeast in measuring cup, stirring to blend. Let stand until foamy (10 minutes).
- Combine 2-1/2 cups bread flour, whole wheat flour, oil and salt in a large bowl.
- Mix in yeast mixture. Knead dough for 10 minutes. If dough is too wet add reserved 1/2 cup flour to bowl (1 tablespoon at a time until it looks uniformly moist and elastic).
- Mix in walnuts.
- Put dough back in bowl, let rise until doubled (1 hour).
- Punch down dough, let rise until doubled (1 hour). Preheat oven to 400F.
- Shape dough into smooth ball and place on baking sheet.
- Bake 35-45 minutes, or until bread is brown and sounds hollow when thumped.
