Pfeffernusse
Ingredients
- 3/4 cup molasses
- 3/4 cup honey
- 3/4 cup shortening
- 4 cups flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon ground allspice
- 1 teaspoon ground mace
- 1/2 teaspoon pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon anise seeds, crushed
- 1 beaten egg
- icing sugar
Directions
- Warm molasses and honey in a pot on medium-low until heated through. Add the shortening and mix well. Once it's melted, remove from heat and cool.
- Combine dry ingredients and mix well. Once wet ingredients are cooled, add the egg.
- Add wet ingredients to dry and stir until just mixed. Allow to rest for 15 minutes. Preheat oven to 350.
- Form into 1" balls and bake for 10 minutes. Roll in icing sugar after they have cooled enough to touch.
- Next time I would use more anise, maybe some ginger, and maybe less mace.
